Why Every Neurodivergent Household Needs a Therapy Ball

An OT’s guide to the most underrated tool for movement, regulation & connection

If there’s one tool we would recommend over and over again to parents of neurodivergent kids it’s the therapy ball. Yep, that big, bouncy thing that might be gathering dust in the corner of a physio room? It’s an absolute gem.

Therapy balls aren’t just for clinics or gym sessions, they’re everyday regulation tools, right in your living room. Here's why we believe every neurodivergent household should have one.

1. Movement = Regulation

Neurodivergent children often need more movement to help their bodies feel just right. A therapy ball gives the nervous system what it’s craving, vestibular (movement) and proprioceptive (deep pressure) input.

Try these simple moves:

  • Belly rolls (child lies face down and rolls back and forth)

  • Gentle bouncing (while seated or supported)

  • Over-ball squishes (you gently press down on their back while they’re draped over the ball)

These aren’t just play, they’re regulation strategies that help kids feel calm, focused, and safe.

2. It’s Core Strength, Without the Boring Bits

Many neurodivergent kids have differences in tone, coordination, or endurance. Building core strength doesn’t have to mean sit-ups or planks.

Just sitting on a therapy ball while reading or doing homework helps strengthen posture muscles in a gentle, playful way. It’s a better way to build body awareness and control.

Everyday idea: Use a therapy ball as a seat at the table for short periods during homework time or when playing there xbox or watching TV!

3. It’s a Sensory Tool and a Bonding Tool

You can use a therapy ball together in connected, co-regulating ways:

  • Bounce together to music

  • Roll it over their back like a massage

  • Make it part of your after-school regulation routine

When we join our kids in their movement, we’re not just supporting sensory needs, we’re connecting with them in the way they need most.

Co-regulation is the foundation for self-regulation.

4. It’s Budget-Friendly, Multi-Purpose & Easy to Store

Let’s be honest: sensory tools can get pricey. But a good quality therapy ball from Everyday OT can do so much for such a small investment. Plus, they deflate when needed and double up for fitness, stretching, and even posture support for adults.

Pro tip: Keep it in sight, not tucked away. The more accessible it is, the more likely your child will use it when their body needs input.

Final Thoughts: It’s More Than a Ball

To someone else, it might look like just a big rubber ball.
To us, it’s:

  • A calm-down tool

  • A strength builder

  • A sensory support

  • A movement break

  • A connection tool
