Enabling Winter Warmth: A Paediatric Occupational Therapist's Guide to keeping warm this winter!

Winter is here and with it comes the age-old struggle of getting our little ones to wear their coats. Does your child have some sensory sensitivities around wearing their coat, do they not feel the cold in the way you would expect? Here are some helpful hints and tips from a Paediatric Occupational Therapist.

1) Shift the focus and shift the lens of what you're trying to do

Instead of trying to force a bulky and uncomfortable coat on your child, try layering comfortable clothing they enjoy wearing. Think of it as a cozy onion, with multiple layers to keep them warm.

2) Compression Wear

Next, let's talk about compression wear. Thermo-insulated compression wear, like what cyclists use, can be a game-changer for those little ones who are sensitive to the bulkiness of traditional coats. Plus, it's like giving them a hug all day long, and who doesn't love a good hug?

3) Deep Pressure Massage

Before putting on their coat or compression wear, try giving your child a deep pressure massage using a non-scented or preferred scented lotion to help calm and regulate them.

Finally, remember that regulating your child's emotions and sensory needs is key to their everyday functioning. And let's be real, it's a lot easier to get them to wear their coat when they're calm and happy. Now, let's go out there and conquer the winter together!
